AstraZeneca has been criticised for raising its prices, the price of its cholesterol-lowering drugs Crestor and Lipitor and its anti-inflammatory drug infliximab as well as raising prices for its cholesterol-lowering drugs Nexium and Zocor.

The company has also been criticised for hiking prices of its drugs, which have been reported to be up more than 10 per cent since 2010, as the US health regulator is weighing whether to extend its rules.

Crestor, the most widely prescribed anti-inflammatory medicine, was the subject of a US government investigation in 2010 after it was found that AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb were colliding with each other and were trying to set prices for their medicines, the agency said in a statement.

The investigation into AstraZeneca’s practices, which included the ‘black-box’ pricing and the ‘out-of-court’ warning issued by the US Food and Drug Administration, revealed that AstraZeneca had been making profits through the ‘black-box’ pricing and ‘out-of-court’ warning issued by the US health regulator in 2010.

The US regulator, the US Justice Department, has found that AstraZeneca had paid too much of a premium to AstraZeneca to gain the licence required to licence the drugs, the drug’s licence required to be withdrawn, and that the drug had already lost its patent protection, the FDA said. The company had paid too much of a premium to have lost the licence, the agency said.

AstraZeneca’s prices for Crestor, which is marketed as Crestor, had risen 10 per cent to Rs 4,849.6m from Rs 4,849.7m from Rs 4,625.6m in 2010, the agency said in a statement.

The prices of the other cholesterol-lowering drugs, which are known as ‘Zocor’, Crestor, and its cholesterol-reducing agents, Nexium and Tagamet, were also being raised in the same period. The latter was the subject of a US government investigation into AstraZeneca’s practices, which included the ‘black-box’ pricing and the ‘out-of-court’ warning issued by the US health regulator.

The agency also found that the price of Zocor had fallen from Rs 2,532.3m in 2010 to Rs 2,625.3m in 2010, the agency said.

In a statement, AstraZeneca said: “This is an update of the previous price of our medicines which had been set at Rs 2,532.3m from 2010. This price was set at Rs 2,500 per tablet and is set to be updated to Rs 4,375 per tablet for the rest of 2010. The price has been raised by Rs 2,500 per tablet from Rs 2,532.3m to Rs 2,625.3m in the past few months.”

The price of Crestor has also been raised to Rs 4,375 per tablet from Rs 4,625.6m in 2010 to Rs 4,750 per tablet in 2011.

The price of the anti-inflammatory drug infliximab is up by Rs 1,000 per tablet from Rs 3,125 in 2009 to Rs 7,125 in 2011.

The price of Zocor is up by Rs 1,000 per tablet from Rs 3,125 in 2010 to Rs 7,125 in 2011.

AstraZeneca said its prices for its cholesterol-lowering drugs, Nexium and Zocor, were also up by Rs 1,000 per tablet from Rs 3,125 in 2010 to Rs 7,125 in 2011.

The drug, which was developed by AstraZeneca’s subsidiary, Lilly, had already been withdrawn from the market and the US government will be required to approve it in mid-2011, the company said.

“Lilly’s decision to sell Zocor in the US and to drop its patent on the drug was announced by US Senator Arlen H. Lipstern on Friday. AstraZeneca was the first to launch this medicine in the US in April 2010 and has been in a position of strength in the US,” the company said.

Lipstern, who has been in Congress since the US government took over in November 2011, said the company is “helping the US government in the process of negotiating with the US Food and Drug Administration over a generic version of Zocor.
